Pick of the Clicks – Beauty of the Butterfly

Late summer has brought several changes to my area, including early leaf drop, higher than normal temperatures, and the familiar call of locusts at night.  A more pleasant change took me back to my childhood years of wonder and awe in the delicate beauty of nature.  The change I am speaking of is the return of butterflies to my area.

While gardening, running, and biking, I have had the pleasure to watch more butterflies than I have seen in some time.  These experiences inspired the following poem:

Beauty of the Butterfly

Dip, sway, turn, and land,
Flutter away, float, and dance,
Repeat the cycle over and over
Amid the joe pye weed and clover,
Catch the eye of the soul,
Allowing time to control
Nature beneath the sky
In the beauty of the butterfly.

Orange, brown, and black
Flying around and back,
To and fro, to and fro,
Sparking curiosity’s youth of the unknown
In the mind of the soul
Captured by the delicate folds
Of the gossamer wings
That offer many blessings
To thee from heaven’s heights
In the beauty of the butterfly.

Fluttering from flower to flower
Bright among the landscape’s shower,
Moving with ease randomized
By a dance that can sometimes
Appear to be without a mission or destination,
Yet allows so much to be awakened
Within thee over time
In the beauty of the butterfly.
