Seasonal Changes: Observing Indian Summer

The first few days of November have brought higher daytime temperatures, very bold and bright sunrises and sunsets, and summer-like weather to my area.  These conditions are often linked to Indian summer.  Though there is debate as to what constitutes Indian summer and who coined the phrase, there is agreement that this change in weather is short-lived and often enjoyed by many as a last chance to hold onto summer.

Over the past few days, I have thoroughly enjoyed running, biking, and observing all that nature has to offer.  The following poem was inspired by my observations:

Indian Summer Rainbows

Golden sunrise in the morning mist,
Red sunset over the western ridge,
Blue, blue skies in the heart of the day
Above green grass that sways
In the breezes blowing
Through the nighttime growing
And shrinking daylight
Below God’s watchful sight
And blessing of grace
Granted each day
As the river of time flows
Through Indian summer rainbows.

Hills graced by colorful leaves
Hanging on the boughs of the trees
Watching the white clouds
Float above the ground
In patterns that change
Throughout the day
Rolling along in life
As autumn’s song rides
The river to the sea
Of life as it comes to be
In the ebb and flow
Of Indian summer rainbows.

As the sunlight of the ‘morn
Rises before
The soul trekking the path
In God’s grace that has
Sustained it and the world around,
The quiet of silence’s song
Tags along
Until the world awakes
And the birds’ songs of praise
Break the spell but not the beauty
Flowing through the
Channels of heaven to earth below
In Indian summer rainbows.
