The sunsets in my area continue to be spectacular and heartwarming despite the colder air temperatures and shorter days November offers. The other night, I was running and watching the sky change as the wind blew fiercely all around, ushering clouds across the sky and making my run quite the challenge.
I also biked that night and caught sight of the colors from different vantage points along my route. The ride was a challenge in the wind and it seemed as if I was pedaling hard to just to move a few inches closer to home. The experience made me think of how life has its moments of smooth sailing as well as times of turmoil, yet there are always certain guides that offer hope, such as the sunrise and the sunset.
The following poem was inspired by my experience and all the changes I saw along the way.
Through the Sunsets of Life
Over the ridge in the western sky
Is where the colors mix just before night
Comes to fall and day comes to pass
Allowing the soul to be thankful for all it has.
In the yellow of the rays spreading the light,
The soul sees the ways of God at work in this life.
In the gold that follows lies the promise
Allowing the soul to hold on to the hope placed upon it
Through the sunsets of life
On the way to peace in time.
In the orange and tangerine that follow
Spread before and above the hollow
There rests an excitement for what is yet to come
In the enlightened knowledge of another day done
Filled with lessons to keep and ponder
As the soul seeks what remains over yonder
In the future that awaits
In the youth of coming days
Spread in and through the sunsets of life
Allowing one to see the truth in the light.
At last the crimson and red
Completing the message from the sky
Giving meaning to this life
And all the blessings of the day
Be they small or large yet granted to us anyway
By the grace of God and through His love
Gifted through the sky and its colors above
To see and hold dear inside
The memories through the sunsets of life
As we make our way to the other side.
